As a clinician and Chief Executive Officer at Blackbird Family Therapy, Inc., with offices in Oakland, California, Matthew Lindgren laid the foundation for his career with an undergraduate degree in English, then an M.A. in Clinical Psychology nearly a decade later. Educated in psychoanalysis, Mr. Lindgren has studied a number of different theories and techniques. During graduate school, Mr. Lindgren learned about Lacanian psychotherapy, non-directed play therapy, and relational psychoanalysis. He was also intrigued by Jungian theory and control mastery.

After earning his Master’s degree, Matthew Lindgren took advantage of other opportunities to become educated in techniques to assist trauma survivors. One such treatment is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), which Mr. Lindgren learned from its founder, Francine Shapiro. By utilizing the technique of moving the eyes while concentrating on memories and sensations, Matthew Lindgren and his clients offer an effective therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is often experienced by soldiers and survivors of rape, domestic violence, assault, stalking, and torture. He also studied EMDR narrative therapy and its effects on adults and children who had experienced significant trauma, as well as the MASTR (Motivation-Adaptive Skills-Trauma Resolution) protocol of motivational interviewing for adolescents and adults with behavioral issues.

In addition, Matthew Lindgren utilizes Ericksonian clinical hypnosis, a technique he incorporates into much of his work. Along with all of these mind-centered techniques, Mr. Lindgren also concerns himself with the whole body. After participating in Peter Levine’s three-year training program, he became a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, equipping him with expertise in a number of body-based techniques.

Matthew Lindgren also offers cognitive behavioral therapy, which is now his primary theoretical orientation. Matthew Lindgren also provides couples therapy based on the work of John Gottman, Sue Johnson, and systems theory. As an experienced public speaker and trainer, he has taught vicarious trauma to clinicians in various agencies and in the clinical training program at JFK University. He has also given guest lectures on the subject of child trauma in classes on developmental psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.
